How to Make a Home Recording Studio ComputerĬhances are, you’re going to want to use your computer as the centerpiece of your setup. “If you have the desire, drive, and creativity, you can make music from pretty much anything.” Melbourne avant-pop musician Sui Zhen has a similar can-do philosophy. Limitations are often useful, because workarounds and hacks will give you a little more identity in your sound.” “What matters is the relationship you build with what you have. “Don’t agonize too much about any particular purchase,” advises JR Seaton, better known as the techno producer Call Super. Start with what you can afford and trade up further down the line. Second-hand stores, the online used-gear marketplace Reverb, and eBay are all crucial resources-one good thing about the relentless pace of music tech is that musicians are forever getting rid of gear in order to make room for new toys. While prices can easily start to add up as you build out even the most basic studio, there are ways to economize. Even so, in talking to a number of artists and producers from across the musical spectrum, we’ve narrowed things down to give budget-conscious novices some guidance. Though it can be hard to know where to begin, the good news is that there is no one right answer. Home recording studio equipment options are plentiful, and prices are a fraction of what they once were: A basic bedroom setup, even when working on a tight budget, can yield the kind of results that would have required booking time in a professional studio not so long ago. For aspiring artists interested in making music on their own, there has never been a better time to get started.

It's again played from a tight, closed-in first-person perspective that has you constantly wondering what's behind you, and it still often focuses on slower movement and exploration through its gorgeous, twisting environments. So while RE7 leans into the dark and creepy haunted house idea of the very first Resident Evil, Village transforms that take by taking cues from the faster, panickier RE4. It traded darkened corridors and jump scares for adrenaline-fueled panic. RE4 was scary because you were being overwhelmed by enemies, backed into corners, and chased by madmen wielding chainsaws. When the latter was released way back in 2005, it significantly revamped what the franchise had been up to that point, swapping the earlier games' slower, survival-horror focus for a more fast-paced action approach. Now Playing: Resident Evil Village Video ReviewĪs has been pretty clear for a while now, Resident Evil Village is Resident Evil 7 through the lens of Resident Evil 4. Village continues to evolve Resident Evil while maintaining a keen grasp on some of its core tenets, finding new ways (or reviving old ones) of getting under your skin and ratcheting up the tension.īy clicking 'enter', you agree to GameSpot's While it's still frightening at points, it takes a less horror-driven tack on the same underlying first-person formula. Though the perspective and mechanical underpinnings are the same, Village branches off in its own direction from RE7, capturing some of the things that were great about that game while resisting the impulse to retread the same ground. Resident Evil Village evolves that idea to make something that feels very different from its predecessor, but which is just as engaging. With Resident Evil 7, Capcom swung for the fences with a first-person perspective, a narrower scope, and more horror-focused gameplay. For the most part, those evolutions have been fascinating recombinations of elements as Resident Evil tries different mixes of survival-horror and action gameplay. Over its 25-year history, the Resident Evil series has continually changed and evolved, like a mad scientist who injects himself with a questionable bio-weapon, mutating into something new every time he shows up. And Mario’s 35th Anniversary is the perfect opportunity for Nintendo to either give this classic a makeover or port it to the Switch’s SNES catalogue. While a second collaboration between Square Enix and Nintendo on a Super Mario RPG 2 would be as amazing as it is unlikely, the game at least deserves to be rereleased for this console generation. So far, the game has only been rereleased twice: once on the Wii U's Virtual Console and again as part of the SNES Classic. Again, elements from the SNES game were used to create a new series.Īs the grandfather to all Mario RPGs, it’s disappointing that Super Mario RPG hasn't received a true sequel or remake. The director for the very first game in the series, Yoshi Maekawa, originally worked on Super Mario RPG as co-director. The Mario & Luigi RPG series also has its roots in the SNES game. Exploration, combat mechanics and even a story involving stars made its way to the new game, launching the series fans know today. Miyamoto wanted to take the RPG in a different direction from Super Mario RPG, but incorporated a lot of key elements into the Paper series. While in development, the game was originally called Super Mario RPG 2 and was meant to branch off the SNES game. If not for Super Mario RPG, we may not have the series today. In particular, it greatly influenced the first Paper Mario game. It is the first Mario role-playing game, with an action-command battle system. RELATED: What Paper Mario Switch Needs to Do to Revive the Series Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (also called Super Mario RPG: Secret of the Seven Stars or simply Super Mario RPG) is a role playing video game designed by Square (currently Square Enix) and released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1996. With Nintendo involved, Square had to step out of their conventional RPG designs and come up with new game play and styles to fit the project. In fact, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto himself was the one who brought up the idea. Square is known for their RPGs and was one of the kings of RPG development during the SNES era, so it's only natural that Nintendo would have trusted its iconic character with the company. Super Mario RPG was a collaboration between Nintendo and Squaresoft, now Square Enix, which is likely why this game has been overlooked for so many years. With Nintendo rumored to be re-releasing and remastering several games for Mario's 35th anniversary, Super Mario RPG should be part of the catalogue, even if it’s only as one of Nintendo Switch Online's SNES offerings. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is widely considered one of the Super Nintendo’s classic RPGs, yet it hasn’t gotten much love from Nintendo over the years. It’s the game that kicked off Mario’s RPG career, and without it we wouldn’t have the Paper Mario or Mario & Luigi series. Another advantage the controller has over other 3rd parties is it's own brand of tilt functionality, dubbed SixSense, which allows play in games like flOw, Toy Home, or even Lair if you're feeling masochistic.įrom this point on, though, the MadCatz controller fails miserably in regards to longevity. This is good in that they "pop" back out faster, although i doubt you'll ever find a situation that requires you to push the triggers fast enough to matter, and bad in that it takes more effort to depress the MadCatz triggers, which tires your fingers faster. The MadCatz, does, however have a "home" (PS) button which many other 3rd parties lack. Another difference form the SIXAXIS most will notice is that the triggers are stiffer/springier. This just doesn't translate very well to the MadCatz controller as it jsut doesn't feel very.solid at all, i might even go so far as to say it feels cheap. Now, anyone that's held a SIXAXIS knows how light it is compared to the force-feedback enabled controllers, an issue we'll have to readjsut to when the DualShock 3 comes out. However, since no 3rd party yet uses bluetooth, any wireless controller is going to use up one of your USB ports anyway. Also, at $29.99, the wired MadCatz is conisderably cheaper than Sony's offering you can even opt for a wireless one for 10 dollars more and the 9 foot cord offer plenty of length for most room setups. Personally i always like to have at least 1 wired controller, that way you've always got one controller to use that you don't have to worry about recharging. But a PS2 doesn't have any motion-sensing capabilities, so if you wanna go multiplayer in something like flOw or WarHawk (assuming you use motion controls in WarHawk) you've still got to either shell out $50 for a SIXAXIS or find a third party solution that actually has SIXAXIS (read: motion sensing) functionality, that's where MadCatz comes in. But what's the fun of having a shiny new system without someone to play with? Of course, having someone else requires another controller, and you can't really count on any having a controller to use this early in the PS3's lifespan unless, of course, you've got one of those PS2-to-PS3 adapters. Alright, so you have yourself a PS3, and if you picked it up before the price drop, owe some money to some unsavory characters as a result. Rewarding continued investment, taking advantage of the sunk-cost fallacy, etc are major factors, make no mistake. Such a trend could also explain why games-as-a-service has taken such prominence in this day and age. Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds is another great example – even if DLC sales weren’t through the roof, Sony is able to offset costs thanks to other factors like hardware sales, console licensing fees, PlayStation Plus revenue, digital sales revenue cuts and much more. Forza Horizon 4 actually leaned further into the games-as-a-service model, offering substantial content updates since launch along with expansion packs. The Forza series, both Forza Motorsport and Forza Horizon, continue to deliver expansion packs in addition to free content. It’s interesting when you think about it in other ways– how many games got ahead of the curb like Grand Theft Auto 5 which focused primarily on delivering GTA Online DLC (especially considering how Grand Theft Auto 4’s Episodes performed in sales)? So it’s not a scenario that’s isolated to just triple A games. Even Hollow Knight’s upcoming Hornet-focused content was meant to be DLC but eventually expanded into Hollow Knight: Silksong (that’s still being given free to backers of the first game, mind you). Citing a “fair number of developers over the last few years”, Schreier explained that this was the reason that DLC for games like Dishonored 2 and Uncharted 4 would become standalone games, as seen in Dishonored: Death of the Outsider and Uncharted: Lost Legacy respectively. On November 8 th 2018, Kotaku journalist Jason Schreier revealed a rather interesting yet unsurprising fact – single-player DLC doesn’t usually sell very well. We had a feeling at the time that it would influence Ubisoft’s approach to DLC in the future, moving beyond the typical add-ons and expansions, but little did we know by how much. It also stood out as one of the best Far Cry titles ever made, despite essentially reusing an entire map and having a shorter story. “On November 8th 2018, Kotaku journalist Jason Schreier revealed a rather interesting yet unsurprising fact – single-player DLC doesn’t usually sell very well.”įar Cry 3: Blood Dragon wasn’t just a financial success, selling over 1 million copies and becoming the fastest selling downloadable title in Ubisoft’s history. Keep in mind that we haven’t even gotten to the part where you ride an armored Blood Dragon with a laser turret in an all-out assault. The gameplay itself was no slouch either, removing many of the limitations of Far Cry titles like fall damage and increasing movement speed. However, while that game was marketed on the basis of its charismatic antagonist Vaas, Blood Dragon’s charm seeped through every pore of the game’s style and atmosphere. Sure, it was Far Cry 3’s open world and gameplay that formed the base for Blood Dragon. More importantly, there was the story-line which focused on the betrayed Rex “Power” Colt and his quest for vengeance against Colonel Sloan. The neon visuals were extravagantly obscene. Harnessing the massive map of Far Cry 3, it churned out a 1980s-style action epic with retro-futuristic visuals and over-the-top story-telling. Standalone titles that served as quasi-expansions were nothing new at this point but Blood Dragon did offer something different. In 2013, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon was released. The coaster is large but compact, elegantly weaving in on itself before going indoors through a warehouse of honey-coloured smoke and big metal whiskey casks. I love the level of detail on this ride, which would be a great fit for a western-themed park (or, better still, a park set amidst the haunted derelict remains of Old West boomtowns - can someone make that please?). These places are actual food outlets in-game rather than just props, though I still find it uncanny that park visitors can't actually sit down with their food, and are consigned to eat-walking while being conveyor-belted around your park little wonder that chronic vomit outbreaks are an issue in Planet Coaster when no one’s allowed to sit and let their food settle properly. Taitjames has created sleek, accurate takes on 14 of the most recognisable food brands in the world - including McDonald's (modern and traditional variants), 7-Eleven, Domino's and the 'healthy option', Subway. But whatever - fast food brands rule the world and plonking some of the most famous ones into my park infuses it with a weirdly comforting sense of realism (which is probably a sign that I’m a brainwashed big-brand puppet). If you were swept away to a faraway place by the Story Land trailer, then this entry may be a bit of a jarring return to our neocapitalist world. It apparently took over 100 hours to build, and you can also download some of the bits used to make it from Coastercad's Workshop page. Story Land is the work of the incredibly talented Coastercad. But throw in some majestic fantasy music with a park that appears to have been plucked from Cinderella's childhood dreams - prior to her becoming a mutilated vengeful harpy as per the Brothers Grimm tale - and something in my soul stirs. Oh, and this mountain sculpted into a giant Yoda with a roller coaster shooting out of his palm made me smile.Īside from when I wistfully watch videos of the now-abandoned American Adventure Theme Park I used to frequent as a kid (in hindsight it probably wasn't very good), I don't usually get moved to tears by theme parks. If that's not enough to satiate you Star Warriors (that’s what you call yourselves, right?), then its creator MuFuTee has also created several other spaceships and bits & bobs from the far-flung galaxy. Even if you’re not a fan of the movies, you’ve got to admire the design of this formidable rollerball of a ride. I liked it, largely for the fact that these three movies account for about 10% of all pop culture in the world, making them quite possibly the best value-for-culture you can get in seven or so hours.įor example, I now know what a Death Star is, and how unspeakably awesome it must be for Star Wars fans to see it in roller coaster form. I only watched the original Star Wars trilogy for the first time last year. You can navitate by clicking the arrows or pressing the arrow buttons on your keyboard. Here's a bunch of my favourite community-made rides, rollercoasters, and other tidbits that I found while perusing the Steam Workshop. So I've left it to the lively Planet Coaster creators' community to get on with the creative malarkey, while I sit in my cigar-stenched park office - summer sun trickling between the venetian blinds, the sound of kids' laughter muffled by the triple-glazed windows - and search for the creations that'll pull the punters in through the gates of my park. I get creative paralysis when I have nothing but a plain green field to 'Build Something Beautiful' on, and develop an inferiority complex when in the campaign I see how great the pre-built bits of park look next to my comparatively bland creations. But if you don't have the architectural vision of Gaudi (who never actually designed a theme park, but really should've), or if - like me - you tell yourself that you could build the next Disney World but just don't have the time, then Planet Coaster can feel a bit intimidating. Planet Coaster is, by many accounts, the greatest theme park sim ever. Grand Theft Auto 4: The Lost and the Damned was mainly focused on expanding the GTA 4 single-player experience, but that didn't mean it was completely missing out on new multiplayer content. In any case, Johnny's relationship with his gang members can be influenced by how well they do on missions together, with Johnny able to spend time outside of missions with some of the gang's members as well. This is in stark contrast to Grand Theft Auto 4 protagonist Niko Bellic, who generally does missions alone in the base game. While out participating in Grand Theft Auto 4: The Lost and the Damned's various activities and missions, Johnny is often accompanied by members of his motorcycle gang. It essentially gave Grand Theft Auto 4 a biker-themed makeover, adding content relating to that theme. This included new activities, new entertainment in Liberty City to check out, new vehicles, new side quests, new mini-games, and more. This quality of life improvement would be adopted by all future GTA games, establishing The Lost and the Damned as hugely important for the Grand Theft Auto franchise in general.īesides making this important quality of life improvement, Grand Theft Auto 4: The Lost and the Damned also added substantial new content for players to check out. Prior to The Lost and the Damned, none of the Grand Theft Auto games utilized checkpoints, meaning failing a mission or dying sent players back to the very beginning. Grand Theft Auto 4: The Lost and the Damned made a major quality of life improvement when compared to other games in the series by adding checkpoints to the missions. In this expansion, players were able to take on the role of the character Johnny Klebitz, a biker who had previously appeared in one of Grand Theft Auto 4's campaign missions. Essentially functioning as a shorter story campaign, The Lost and the Damned nevertheless made some major improvements on the GTA 4 formula to be an arguably better all-around experience. The first Grand Theft Auto 4 single-player DLC was released in 2009 in the form of Grand Theft Auto 4: The Lost and the Damned. When one considers how well-received the GTA 4 DLC was, it's really no surprise that Rockstar Games fans want the company to release similar content for GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2. Grand Theft Auto 4's DLC also had the benefit of introducing some characters that would later have roles in GTA 5, enriching the franchise's HD universe in the process. Grand Theft Auto 4 received two major DLC expansions after its launch, which both went a long way in extending the game's life as well as delivering more quality open world gameplay for fans to sink their teeth into. For those wondering why that is, all they need to do is take a look at how Rockstar Games has handled DLC in the past. Many modern AAA games receive DLC as a given, yet fans seem especially anxious for Rockstar Games to release DLC for Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2. Again, Rockstar has instead released new content for Red Dead Redemption 2's online component, Red Dead Online. Likewise, Red Dead Redemption 2 launched in 2018, and fans of the epic open world western have been keeping their fingers crossed for that game to get story DLC as well, only for no announcement to ever happen. Unfortunately, that has never happened to date, with Rockstar instead focusing its efforts on GTA 5's GTA Online mode. Grand Theft Auto 5 launched in 2013, considering its incredible success, many fans have expected Rockstar Games to release story DLC for the game. |
